THE FINEST WOODS, FIRE AND TIME:
A harmonic mixture that creates a special barrel for exceptional wines
THE MOST SELECT BARRELS
We like to delve into our past to rediscover ancient techniques. Placing tradition at the cutting edge at the service of our clients.
Santiago Gangutia founded the first barrel-making workshop in the area in 1870. Since then, five generations of the family have continued plying the trade in Cenicero, in the heart of La Rioja.
In this new phase, with Fernando Gangutia at the helm, the company is combining the best of the past with all the latest forms of production. Quality certificates, Chain of Custody, Food Safety, R+D… all signs of a fruitful past and a promising future.
Our work begins in the forest. Our team selects the best grains from American, French and Central European oaks: Jupilles, Tronçais, Vosgues, Missouri, Ohio… only with the highest quality raw materials can we create the best product.
The wood is then left to dry for over two years. A natural unhurried process in which sun and water clean and refine the wood removing its most stringent tannins to transform its phenolic profile.
The barrel improves the wine’s organoleptic properties and gives it added value. Tonelería Gangutia has all the tools required to make a bespoke product that respects the personality of the different wine varieties and production areas.
As we know that every wine requires a certain kind of barrel, we place all our “savoir-faire” at your disposal.
The toasting of the barrel affects the final composition of the wood. The barrel-maker controls the intensity and the timing of the flame to create a broad palette of tones: from the subtlety needed by wine to the roundness required by spirits.
The decay of the compounds in the oak releases, as if by magic, aromas of vanilla, roasted coffee, fruity and spicy notes … Our knowledge of the timing and the techniques help us create the desired aromatic profile.
For over a century, Tonelería Gangutia has been driven by the same goal: customer satisfaction. We offer barrels of different dimensions and capacities that meet the expectations of wineries and distilleries.
As a result of our commitment to the environment and the need to optimize what are limited resources, we have developed a complete line of alternatives: staves, chips, buckets, a whole range of enological possibilities for a competitive, demanding market.
